Michael Atzumes, koiaistor, circa 1315-1319. Seal (Lead, 22 mm, 11.69 g, 12 h). MHP-[Θ]V H / A/NO/I/A (?) - IC/XC Half-length bust of the Mother of God “Hodegetria”. Rev. +/ЄN COI M/IXAHΛ ATZV/MHC O KOIAI/[CT]ⲰP AXPANTЄ / KUPOI KAI ΓP/AΦAC KAI ΠP/AK[TЄ]A in seven lines (“In you, immaculate one, Michael Atzumes, the koiastor, authenticates his letters and acts”). Cheynet/Theodoridis 23 (“Ateumes”), correction by W. Seibt, JÖB 62 (2012), p. 297. A charming Mother of God on a late Byzantine seal. Very fine.

As koiaistor, Michael Atzumes was a high palace official. He is attested as domestikos of the Anatolikon theme from 1311 to 1315/19 and as pansebastos sebastos and koiasistor in 1315-1319. He was one of the addressees of the prolific scribe Michael Gabras and a benefactor of the poet Manuel Philes of Ephesos
